On the weekend we went into the bush to chop some firewood and also went to Gracetown to check out “the swell of the decade”.
Pepper did not appreciate the orange earmuffs I insisted she wear but did enjoy being set down among the trees so she could explore the little blades of grass and eat some rocks. While the noise of the chainsaw did slightly spoil the ambience of the forest, it was really beautiful to be out there in the crisp winter air with all the tall trees around us and the sun filtering in.
Our wanderings took us to Prevelly and Gracetown where, along with a quite a large handful of people, we had a peek at the waves rolling into the bay. There’d been a lot of hype about the oncoming swell, and according to some (ie. my husband) it perhaps didn’t live up to the talk. Even so, there’s beauty in big waves whether or not someone is careening across them on a piece of foam. The sea is a wild and tempestuous thing, and I can’t help but feel very small when I’m looking at the way a body of water picks itself up and curls and foams and crashes.
Tim and I both have appreciation for the water, but perhaps in different ways. I hope Pepper appreciates it’s majesty one day too. I can already see there’s something in her eye which tells me she’ll be out there the first chance she gets.
Here’s a short film I made while we were out in the bush. You can see it in HD over on vimeo.
